The Dandy Warhols – Rockmaker

Rockmaker, The Dandy Warhols 12th album. It’s been 4 years since their last album, but really 5 because the Tafelmuzic album is really just experimental, and most tracks I wouldn’t even call songs. Reading an interview with lead singer/songwriter Courtney Taylor-Taylor they’re going for a heavier sound than normal. Let’s check it out.

The album starts off with some crunchy sounding guitars, nice groove, but I’m hoping the album picks up from here.

Danzig With Myself features Frank Black from The Pixies, excellent riff, sounds like classic Dandys.

After listening to a couple more songs it sounds like every song on this album is going to have a cool sounding riff.

One of the interesting things about this band is Courtney Taylor-Taylor uses different styles of singing on each track. It’s not like say AC/DC where every song is sung the same, you can have a song in falsetto followed by a song with deep vocals, etc. Not sure what you’d call the vocals on Love Thyself, but it was…an interesting choice.

I liked every song on the album until Real People, that song was kind of annoying.

The highlight of the album is I’d Like To Help You With Your Problem. Sounds like a classed Black Sabbath song.

It’s a good album, their best since their 2016 album Distortland. It doesn’t have an anthem like Bohemian Like You, but there’s a lot to like. A welcome addition to their library. I probably would have liked the album even more but the last few tracks kind of petered off.

Reasons to get this album:

  • You hate bands that have been consistently been making good music for 30 years.
